This is a proud FloMo moment.
Fisheries NZ has approved the use of FloMo to target scampi, with the approval coming into force on 9 September 2026. This was based on trial results that demonstrated an approximate 60% reduction in discards, a 73% reduction in Sea Perch by-catch, and equivalent catch rates with improved size selectivity for larger Grade 1-3 scampi.
We’re incredibly proud of those stats, and they’re real validation for the benefits FloMo delivers. It’s a massive step forward for Precision Seafood Harvesting in New Zealand, as well as supporting our international trials and the application of FloMo in other crustacean fisheries, including prawns and shrimp.
A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to achieving this, especially the team at Bioeconomy Science Institute for the design and testing of the system, and SeaEagle Fishing Ltd for making their vessel available for the trials, as well as the skippers and crew who conducted the at-sea testing programme. What a team.
